Compassion

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of meeting and spending some time with Dr. Richard Bedlack, Director of the ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis) Clinic at Duke University Medical Center. ALS is more commonly known as “Lou Gehrig’s Disease”. Almost immediately, it became apparent that he treats all of his patients with the utmost care and compassion.

He reminded me of my daughter’s gastroenterologist, Dr. Souheil Gebara at Beaumont Health Systems. Dr. Gebara has been her doctor since shortly after she was born. He has been caring, compassionate, loving, understanding, and an open ear for both my daughter and our family through all the ups and downs of living with her motility disorder. I quickly became aware of how important it is to have a doctor that exhibits these incredible qualities to get you through a life-long chronic disease. He is part of the reason Bayley and our family has been able to trudge through this journey with our heads held high and a positive attitude toward life.

One of my wishes to other patients and families in similar situations is that they too find a doctor, nurse, friend, or family member that can express these same qualities towards them to help guide them through their own journey in life.
